A military coup is reportedly unfolding right next door in Benin Republic as the country’s democratic constitution has been suspended. Cotonou has been tense since the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, with heavy troop movements spotted around several strategic locations.
Local media in Benin report that the unrest began at dawn when President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo area came under attack by soldiers said to be led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri. Not long after, Tigri appeared on national television, which is believed to be in military hands, announcing himself as the chairman of what he called the military reestablishment committee.
The situation in Cotonou remains highly unstable, and security movements continue across the city. So far, President Talon and his administration have not issued any official statement regarding the attack or the unfolding events.
