A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the Adeyemi Federal University of Education community yesterday, as sixteen of its prospective corps members lost their lives in a fatal road accident while heading to the NYSC orientation camp in Gombe.
Two others are currently fighting for their lives after the 18-seater bus conveying them crashed, abruptly ending the hopes and dreams of young Nigerians who were set to begin their national service.
Emergency responders raced to the scene, recovering the bodies and moving the injured to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
Authorities are yet to give an official statement on what caused the accident, but investigations are already underway.
The mood around AFUED is deeply somber as students, staff, and grieving families struggle to process the sudden loss. Many describe the incident as a heavy blow not just to the institution but to the entire nation.
The tragedy has once again sparked conversations around road safety and renewed calls for the federal government to overhaul transport arrangements and strengthen safety measures for NYSC-bound corps members nationwide.
