NSCDC Intercepts 4,000 Litres of Petrol From Smugglers in Badagry

The Lagos Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has intercepted four thousand litres of petrol from suspected smugglers who were attempting to move the product out of the country through illegal routes and waterways in the Badagry area.

The State Commandant, Adedotun Keshinro, who showcased the seized items, said the operation was carried out after the Badagry Division received credible intelligence on November 7. He explained that the Divisional Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corps Ekunola Gbenga, led the team that moved in quickly to stop the smugglers.

According to him, the suspects, who are known for siphoning fuel and other petroleum products, took to their heels when they saw operatives approaching. They abandoned about one hundred and fifty yellow kegs of twenty five litres and several Ragolis containers already filled with petrol. He added that more empty kegs had been lined up for loading before officers arrived.

Keshinro also praised the Nigerian Navy for handing over seventy three recovered twenty five litre kegs of petrol to the Badagry Division, saying the gesture shows the strong teamwork between both security agencies.

He warned those sabotaging the nation’s economy to stay away from illegal activities, especially as the year draws to a close when smuggling usually increases. He stressed that anyone caught will face strong resistance and the full weight of the law.

The commandant also cautioned illegal dredgers operating under the Third Mainland, Carter and Eko bridges, noting that their activities endanger lives and threaten the safety of the bridges and other critical national assets.
