Gunmen suspected to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have launched a deadly attack on a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) checkpoint in Bakin Ruwa, along the Maje border in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The assault, which occurred around midnight on Wednesday, resulted in the killing of three immigration officers.
The attack has heightened fear and tension among residents of border communities, many of whom say they are increasingly worried about the steady rise in violent incidents along the Nigeria–Benin border corridor
Multiple local sources told Channels Television that the terrorists stormed the checkpoint unexpectedly and opened fire on officers on duty, killing three of them instantly. The sudden nature of the attack left the officers with little chance to defend themselves
A security source disclosed that the assailants fled through nearby bushes immediately after the operation. The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the incident but noted that details were still sketchy as investigations were ongoing.
Efforts to reach officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service in the state for comments were unsuccessful, as they could not be contacted at the time of filing the report. Nonetheless, several locals and security personnel in Bagudo, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the incident did take place.
The latest attack comes barely three weeks after a Nigeria Customs Service officer was killed in a similar incident. According to residents, the attackers arrived in large numbers and began shooting indiscriminately, forcing people to flee for safety.
In that previous attack, the Customs officer was killed on the spot, after which the gunmen set the security camp.
