The United States Government has announced a major intervention aimed at helping Nigerians affected by conflict and food insecurity.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, through its Press and Media Specialist, Ms. Aishah A. Gambari, revealed that the donation involves $32.5 million to the World Food Programme (WFP). The funding will focus on providing food and nutrition assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in conflict-affected areas of Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest regions.

The Embassy said the support is designed to save lives and ease the suffering of vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, who are disproportionately affected by food shortages and malnutrition in these regions.

“With this contribution, WFP Nigeria will provide food and nutrition assistance to 764,205 beneficiaries across conflict-affected areas,” the statement said. “This includes complementary nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, and 43,235 children, delivered through electronic food vouchers.”

Ms. Gambari emphasized that the intervention is part of a broader commitment by the United States to respond to humanitarian crises in Nigeria. She said the U.S. recognizes the urgent need for food and nutrition support in areas where ongoing conflicts have disrupted livelihoods, displaced families, and put children at risk of malnutrition.

The WFP will work closely with local partners to ensure the aid reaches those who need it most, providing not only immediate relief but also supporting long-term resilience for affected communities.

Food insecurity remains a major challenge in Nigeria, with millions of people facing limited access to sufficient and nutritious food due to conflict, economic instability, and climate-related factors. Initiatives like this one aim to bridge the gap and provide hope to those struggling to meet basic needs.

The U.S. Government’s donation underlines the importance of international collaboration in addressing humanitarian crises, highlighting the critical role of aid agencies in delivering timely support to vulnerable populations across the country.
