Debate Sparks in Badagry: Why Councilors Must Stick to a Single Title

A fresh debate over how elected ward representatives should be addressed has emerged in Badagry, following a report presented by Mr. Samuel Hunpatin on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Hunpatin’s report, which highlighted the purposeful visits of Ward E Councilor and Deputy Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Pedekun Matthew, to various Community Development Associations (CDAs), stirred discussions after he consistently referred to the lawmaker strictly as “Councilor Pedekun Matthew.”

This, according to him, was a deliberate departure from the widespread practice where grassroots representatives are often referred to with multiple or higher-sounding titles beyond their official mandate.

Reacting to the development, respected writer and commentator, Mr. Reuben Hopo, praised both Councilor Pedekun and Hunpatin for setting a positive example in strengthening democracy at the grassroots.

“Councilor Pedekun Matthew, Deputy Leader, thank you, Sir, for this commendable effort. As the representative of Ward E, it is inspiring that you are taking steps to understand the journey of governance from the grassroots,” Hopo said.

He stressed that democracy could only thrive if elected officials at the ward, constituency, and district levels are properly identified and addressed in line with the mandate conferred on them by the electorate.

According to him, “Nobody needs to be a genius to know that a councilor deserves to be called by the title earned after winning an election at the ward level. It is wrong and confusing to address a councilor with titles belonging to state or federal legislators.”

Hopo further urged the public to put an end to misconceptions that elevate the designation of councilors beyond their mandate, noting that such misrepresentation undermines the clarity and structure of governance.

“Within Ward E, his honoured title is ‘Councilor.’ He deserves recognition with that same title even up to the federal level. Councilors are notable personalities and must be accorded respect for the mandate they hold,” he emphasized.

He expressed optimism that with consistent civic enlightenment, Badagry Local Government could lead the way in setting the record straight nationwide.

“BLG can be first with exciting experiences if we embody useful enlightenment. When we help the system, the system will, in turn, help us,” Hopo added.
