The long-standing push to make the Seme-Krake Joint Border Post in Badagry a truly integrated gateway to West Africa has received fresh momentum as Nigeria and the Benin Republic move to deploy technology and joint security systems at the facility.
The Nigeria Customs Service and Benin Republic Customs Administration announced the direction after a joint assessment of the Seme border on Friday, September 11, led by Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and Benin Customs Director-General Col. Raouf Malehhossou Aboudou.
Adeniyi said the exercise was not about simply fixing roads, offices or other facilities at the border but about creating a modern and interconnected border system capable of supporting faster trade and stronger security.
He noted that the Seme-Krake facility already has traffic lanes, parking spaces, offices, a weighbridge and scanner housing, but stressed that technology must connect the operations of both countries.
“Without interconnectivity, this is not a joint border post. It is two border posts sharing a car park,” Adeniyi said.
Under the proposed arrangement, customs declarations, cargo information, risk profiles and enforcement alerts could be exchanged in real time between Nigerian and Beninese authorities.
The upgrade is also expected to restore scanning operations, strengthen surveillance, improve lighting and access control, harmonise bilingual procedures and establish joint risk management systems.
Nigeria and Benin are further planning a permanent joint enforcement and intelligence mechanism to improve coordination against cross-border crimes.
In a move aimed at making the border more trader-friendly, particularly for women, a dedicated facility for women traders along the Badagry-Seme corridor will also be introduced. It is expected to simplify procedures for small consignments while providing information and channels for reporting alleged harassment, extortion and poor treatment.
Col. Aboudou backed the initiative and pledged Benin Customs’ support, while Seme Area Controller, Comptroller Abdullahi Shuaibu Kaila, assured that the command was prepared to support the planned transformation.
When completed, the modernisation could position Seme-Krake as a more efficient gateway for legitimate trade, reduce border delays and improve security and transparency across the Nigeria-Benin corridor and the wider West African market.
