Lagos State Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress APC governorship candidate, Dr Obafemi Kadri Hamzat, has pledged that his administration will reconstruct the long troubled Gbaji-Owode-Apa Road without waiting for the Federal Government to release funds already allocated for the project.
Hamzat made the pledge on Thursday morning during a courtesy visit to the Palace of the Alapa of Apa, Egun-Awori Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Oyekan Adekanmi Ilufemiloye Ajose Posi III, as part of his campaign activities in Badagry.
The Deputy Governor, who expressed displeasure over the condition of the road as he travelled into the area, confirmed that the road had already been awarded by the Federal Government, but that funds had yet to be released to the contractor.
“I see the road is bad and I have been informed about it. I understand the contract has been awarded by the Federal Government, but its fund has not been released yet. We will not wait for that. Let them use the fund for another project. We will reconstruct it when we emerge in 2027,” Hamzat said.
The pledge comes against the backdrop of sustained efforts by the Member representing Badagry Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, to secure the reconstruction of the road.
Whingan has consistently stated that the road contract had been awarded and that his efforts in the National Assembly led to the provision of N6 billion in the 2025 budget for the project. However, he said the allocated funds had yet to be released to the contractor.
The Badagry Federal Constituency representative has also maintained that he would continue to lobby for the release of the funds to enable the contractor commence substantive work on the road.
Addressing APC members and supporters in Badagry, Hamzat also called for increased voter participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He urged party members to mobilise residents across the constituency to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his own governorship bid, his running mate Princess Damilola Sonayon James, and other APC candidates.
According to him, Badagry stands to benefit from the emergence of the Lagos APC governorship ticket, particularly with the selection of Princess Damilola Sonayon James, an indigene of Badagry Local Government from Badagry West LCDA, as his running mate.
Hamzat said greater voter participation would be necessary to translate political support into electoral results, noting that turnout in previous elections had remained relatively low.
He described President Tinubu as a Lagos-born political leader and appealed to APC members to work towards securing strong support for the President and all APC candidates in 2027.
Princess Damilola Sonayon James accompanied Hamzat on the visit, alongside the Director General of his campaign, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Lagos APC Chairman Senator Ganiu Solomon, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi and several members of the Governance Advisory Council GAC.
Among the Badagry political leaders who received the APC governorship candidate were the three council chairmen, Babatunde Hunpe of Badagry Local Government, Ajose Peter Kumayon of Olorunda LCDA and Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren of Badagry West LCDA.
Also present were Hon Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, Hon Olusegun Onilude Adeniran, APC candidate for Badagry Federal Constituency, Hon Olatunde Oladunjoye Yusuf, APC candidate for Badagry Constituency II, Hon Gbenu Henugbe Joseph, APC candidate for Badagry Constituency I, and Hon Bonu Solomon Saanu, incumbent member representing Badagry Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The Gbaji-Owode-Apa Road remains a major transportation route connecting communities within the Badagry axis, with its condition continuing to generate concerns among residents and road users.
