Residents of Yeponawa and Ayede communities in the ChurchGate area of Olorunda Local Council Development Area received a major boost on Monday as the Executive Chairman, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, personally inspected the ongoing canal dredging project aimed at reducing flooding and improving access between the two communities.

The inspection visit underscores the chairman's commitment to addressing environmental challenges and improving the welfare of residents, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.

Hon. Ajose toured the dredging site to assess the progress of work being carried out by the Lagos State Government through the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources. The project is designed to ensure the free flow of stormwater through the canal and channel excess floodwater into adjoining swamp areas, thereby reducing the risk of flooding in the affected communities.

The chairman's visit came a day after the Supervisor for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Amosu Jimoh, visited the area on his directive following an appeal from the Community Development Association. Community leaders had raised concerns over the impact of the dredging exercise on the only accessible road linking Yeponawa and Ayede, and requested the provision of a temporary wooden footbridge to ease movement during the project.

Speaking with residents during the inspection, Hon. Ajose said he considered it necessary to personally assess the condition of the road and monitor the ongoing intervention, especially as the rainy season intensifies.

According to him, the council remains committed to working closely with relevant state government agencies to ensure lasting solutions to flooding and infrastructure challenges across Olorunda LCDA.

He disclosed that the local government has established a strong working relationship with the Lagos State Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources to deliver much-needed relief to residents of the area.

The chairman assured the communities that his administration would continue to take proactive measures to protect lives and property from flooding while also ensuring that residents are not unduly inconvenienced by ongoing development projects.

Officials of the Lagos State Government explained that, in addition to dredging the canal, plans are underway to construct a link culvert bridge across the canal to reconnect the two communities and improve transportation.

An engineer attached to the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Engr. Olanrewaju, said the project will provide a permanent solution to the access challenge caused by the swamp separating the communities. He noted, however, that a temporary wooden footbridge is required to serve residents during the construction period.

He commended the support of Hon. Ajose, who has agreed to facilitate the construction of the temporary footbridge to ensure uninterrupted movement for residents and commuters pending the completion of the state government's mini bridge project.

The visit further highlights the chairman's hands-on approach to governance and his determination to ensure that critical infrastructure projects deliver immediate and long-term benefits to the people of Olorunda LCDA.
