The Olorunda Local Council Development Area has commenced the installation of solar powered street lights across five major riverine communities in a move aimed at improving security, safety and living conditions in the rural areas.

The project, initiated by the Executive Chairman of Olorunda LCDA, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, is being implemented under the administration’s APK Light Up Rural Area Initiative.

The initiative is targeted at Ojogun, Moba, Ikotun Ase, Dadi Louis and Oko Ogbo, communities where access to conventional electricity remains a significant challenge.

With the installation of the solar lights, residents are expected to experience improved visibility after dark, while businesses, pedestrians and commuters are expected to benefit from a safer and more accessible environment.

Work on the project is already progressing across the benefiting communities. Thirty solar powered street lights have been installed at Moba, while another 30 have been installed at Dadi Louis. As of Friday, engineers had also commenced installation at Ikotun Ase, with work expected to extend to the remaining communities as the project advances.

The intervention is particularly significant for the riverine communities, where the difficult terrain and waterways can make the extension of conventional electricity infrastructure challenging. The use of solar powered lighting provides an alternative that can deliver public lighting without depending entirely on the conventional power supply.

Beyond street lighting, the Ajose administration is also looking to tackle transportation challenges confronting residents of the riverine areas. The Chairman has pledged to procure two boats to improve movement across the waterways and provide residents with a more dependable means of transportation.

The two initiatives, when fully implemented, are expected to provide relief in some of the areas that have remained major concerns for residents, particularly security, transportation and access to basic infrastructure.

The Chairman is expected to formally commission the solar street lighting projects as part of activities marking his first year in office. The council is expected to announce the date for the anniversary and commissioning ceremonies in due course.

The ongoing project has further placed rural development at the centre of the administration’s agenda, with the APK Light Up Rural Area Initiative seeking to ensure that development reaches communities beyond the urban centres of Olorunda LCDA.

For residents of Ojogun, Moba, Ikotun Ase, Dadi Louis and Oko Ogbo, the arrival of solar street lights could mark an important change in daily life, particularly after sunset, as the communities look forward to brighter streets and improved safety.

Badagry Today will continue to monitor the project and developments across Olorunda LCDA.
