The Olorunda Local Council Development Area has launched a sweeping reform aimed at restoring order across its motor parks, with plans to rebuild key facilities and reclaim trading spaces allegedly allocated illegally in communities such as Mowo, Aradagun and Morogbo.
The move, which forms part of a broader strategy to improve sanitation, strengthen regulation and boost internally generated revenue, was unveiled during a stakeholders’ meeting held with traders and motor park union leaders at the Mowo Ado-Ado Motor Park, inside the council secretariat in Iworo.
The meeting drew a wide range of participants including traders, drivers, union executives and senior council officials, all of whom engaged in discussions on long-standing operational challenges within the parks.
Speaking at the session, the Executive Chairman of Olorunda LCDA, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, said the council is determined to reposition motor park operations through far-reaching structural reforms. He explained that the planned remodeling and reconstruction would not only improve the physical outlook of the parks but also create a more organised and business-friendly environment.
Ajose raised concerns over poor sanitation and widespread non-compliance with revenue payments among traders, warning that the era of lax enforcement was over. He also condemned the actions of some union leaders accused of illegally allocating trading spaces, stressing that such practices undermine the authority of the council and would no longer be tolerated.
Backing the chairman’s stance, the Supervisor for Transportation and Parks, Hon. Fagbamila Oluwadamilare Adewale, alongside the Council Manager, Alhaji Moruf Adesanya, made it clear that only the council has the legal authority to allocate spaces within motor parks. They cautioned individuals and groups to desist from unauthorised activities or face sanctions.
On revenue compliance, the Council Treasurer, Mrs. Awusinu, urged traders to adhere strictly to the payment of levies and permits. She noted that consistent revenue inflow is critical to funding infrastructure upgrades and delivering essential services, lamenting that irregular payments have slowed development efforts in the area.
Ajose further hinted that the redevelopment process may involve adjustments affecting some occupants, but emphasised that cooperation from all stakeholders would be key to achieving lasting results. He added that safety issues, particularly activities around high-tension power lines within the parks, would also be addressed as part of the reform.
In his response, the Zonal Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in Mowo, Mr. Taofiq Yekeen, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would bring order, growth and better coordination to motor park operations across Olorunda LCDA.
