Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI have arrested five suspects after intercepting a large sum of cash believed to be linked to suspicious activities in Borno State.
Security sources disclosed that the suspects two women and three men were travelling in a red Golf wagon with registration number MNG 463 XA when they were stopped at a military checkpoint while heading towards Magumeri.
A routine search of the vehicle led to the discovery of about N37 million hidden inside a Ghana must go bag and a sack, raising immediate suspicion among the troops on duty.
According to preliminary findings, the suspects initially claimed they were unaware of the exact amount of money in their possession. They later alleged that the cash was intended for distribution to beneficiaries of a non governmental organisation.
The soldiers also recovered no fewer than ten assorted mobile phones from the suspects during the operation.
Security officials confirmed that the arrested individuals, along with the seized cash and other exhibits, would be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation.
They reaffirmed the military’s resolve to intensify surveillance across operational zones to block the movement of illicit funds and materials capable of supporting criminal and insurgent activities.
