The Aholu of Ajara Agamathen Kingdom, Aholu Agano Toniyon I, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to commence the construction of the proposed Tohon Bridge in Badagry as part of the ongoing Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway project, describing it as a critical step toward restoring hope and accelerating development in the ancient coastal town.
The royal father made the appeal while speaking with journalists during activities marking his eighth coronation anniversary at the Ajara Agamathen Palace in Badagry.
According to him, activating the Badagry component of the project through the proposed bridge linking Tohon Badagry in Lagos State to Vawhegbo in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State would significantly boost public confidence and address years of infrastructural neglect in the area.
He noted that the proposed bridge, which is 700 meters in length, is long overdue and would drastically reduce the hours residents and commuters spend waiting for canoe services to cross the river between both communities.
“The people of Badagry and our neighbours in Ogun State have suffered enough delays and hardship in movement. This bridge alone will transform lives, improve commerce and open up the region for greater economic activities,” the monarch said.
Aholu Agano Toniyon I acknowledged the widespread commendation the Sokoto Badagry Highway project has received across the country, describing it as a bold and visionary move by the Tinubu administration toward national integration and economic growth. However, he stressed that commencing the project from Badagry would reflect fairness, inclusiveness and genuine commitment to uplifting historically underserved regions.
He further expressed confidence that once the Badagry end is activated, the project would enjoy stronger community support and faster socio economic impact.
The coronation anniversary attracted several dignitaries and traditional rulers from across Badagry and its environs. Among those in attendance were the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr Babatunde Hunpe; Aholu Temitope Sedonu Adamson, the Topon Toyiaga of Ajitho Kingdom; the Onibereko of Ibereko Kingdom; Aholu Jimoh Fabiyi Sano Toyi I of Koga Zebbe Kingdom; Aholu Abiodun Patinvo of Yafin Kingdom; the Onilogbo of Ilogbo Kingdom; and Aholu Awogbemi Emmanuel of Akrakumo Kingdom, among others.
Residents who spoke at the event echoed the monarch’s appeal, expressing optimism that the highway and proposed bridge would unlock new opportunities for trade, tourism and regional development in Badagry and neighbouring communities.
