2027: Pressure Mounts on Mawuyon Ajose to Join for Lagos Governorship Race

As political activities gradually build toward the 2027 governorship race in Lagos State, growing calls are mounting on Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose to throw his hat into the ring.

Within the ranks of the All Progressives Congress and across key stakeholder blocs, party loyalists, community leaders and professional associates are said to be urging the Badagry born technocrat to formally declare his interest in the state’s top job.

While established names such as Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Femi Gbajabiamila, Akinwunmi Ambode, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, Tokunbo Abiru and Tunji Alausa continue to feature prominently in succession conversations, insiders say a quiet but persistent movement is building around Ajose.

Sources close to the development reveal that influential voices from Ikeja, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Epe and particularly Badagry division have intensified consultations, urging him to step forward. For many of his supporters, the argument goes beyond personal ambition. It is about equity, inclusion and what they describe as a long overdue political balancing within the state’s historic divisions.

Badagry remains the only one of Lagos’ five traditional divisions yet to produce a governor. As conversations around zoning and internal party equilibrium resurface, advocates of Ajose’s candidacy insist that the coastal corridor deserves serious consideration in the unfolding power equation.

In recent months, Ajose has reportedly engaged in wide ranging consultations, meeting elders, youth leaders, technocrats and party stakeholders across the state. Though he has not made any formal declaration, observers say his listening tour signals responsiveness to the growing calls.

Those pushing his candidacy point to his technocratic depth and boardroom experience. Ajose is understood to have served on the boards of major organisations, overseeing strategic decisions that shape governance frameworks, enterprise growth and institutional stability. Supporters argue that such experience positions him as a steady hand capable of managing the complexities of a megacity like Lagos.

Beyond competence, there is also a generational sentiment driving the pressure. With Lagos confronting rapid urban expansion, youth unemployment, transportation challenges and climate related risks, advocates believe the state requires leadership grounded in systems thinking rather than political spectacle.

Party insiders, however, caution that the governorship ticket of the APC remains one of the most competitive prizes in Nigerian politics. Endorsements, alliances and internal consensus will ultimately determine the direction of the race.

Still, momentum appears to be building. From community forums in Badagry to private strategy sessions in Ikeja and Lagos Island, the refrain is growing louder: Ajose should run.

Whether he heeds the call remains to be seen. For now, Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose continues his consultations quietly, even as pressure mounts for him to formally join the 2027 Lagos governorship contest.
