BLG Chairman Hunpe Presents 2026 Budget of ₦12.340 Billion Before Councillors

The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon Babatunde Hunpe, on Tuesday laid before the 8th Legislative Council a ₦12.34 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, tagged the Budget of Inclusiveness and Development. The presentation took place at the Aholu C D Akran Legislative Chamber.

Addressing the councillors, Hon Hunpe expressed gratitude for their steady support and explained that the budget was crafted to respond directly to the needs and aspirations of residents across all wards. He announced a total budget size of ₦12,340,060,441.42.

According to him, ₦5,681,483,011, representing 46 percent of the budget, has been earmarked for recurrent expenditure covering salaries, pensions, gratuities and other essential services. The remaining ₦6,658,577,429.54, making up 54 percent, is allocated to capital projects including infrastructure renewal, education, healthcare, water expansion, agriculture, youth and women empowerment, social welfare, security, tourism and sports development.

Hon Hunpe noted that the 2026 proposal places strong emphasis on human capital development, community infrastructure and strategic investments that will drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of Badagry residents. He appealed to the public to continue fulfilling their civic obligations, especially in the area of tax payment, stressing that collective effort is key to achieving the administration’s development goals.

In his remarks, the Leader of the House, Hon Bankole Mautin Asokere, observed that this was the first budget presentation of the newly inaugurated 8th Legislative Council, following its proclamation on July 28, 2025. He described the annual budget process as a constitutional covenant between the government and the people, adding that a responsible budget must reflect the genuine priorities of the citizenry.

Hon Asokere reiterated the core duties of the legislature—lawmaking, representation, budget scrutiny and approval, oversight and confirmation of appointees—and assured that the Council is committed to working harmoniously with the Executive for the progress of the Local Government.

He, however, raised concerns about untapped revenue sources and called for stronger internally generated revenue mechanisms, proper monitoring of collections and dependable data to drive accurate budget forecasts. He urged residents and business owners to pay their dues promptly to support efficient service delivery.

The House Leader further assured the Chairman that the Appropriation Bill would receive diligent and speedy consideration, reaffirming the Council’s loyalty to the administration while remaining committed to the principles of good governance.

The presentation drew a wide array of dignitaries, including the First Lady of Badagry Local Government, Chief Mrs Elizabeth Hunpe; the Vice Chairman, Hon Akeem Adeyemi; former Chairman and Vice Chairman, Hon Onilude Segun Adeniran and Hon Elizabeth Kappo; the Council Management Team led by the Council Manager, Mrs Olusanya Mary Abosede; and APC Apex Leaders led by Chief Moses Zannu Ogunbiyi.

Also present were the APC Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Alhaji Gafar Meyon; APC Apex Women led by Alhaja Kikelomo Ladipo; political stakeholders, party loyalists and community representatives.
