Hunpe Commissions Fully Remodeled Pota PHC, Says “We Turned Public Outcry Into Action”

The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon Babatunde Hunpe, on Saturday commissioned the newly remodeled Pota Primary Health Centre, calling the project a symbol of responsive leadership and proof that the administration listens to the people.

The event, held at the renovated PHC in Pota, drew community leaders, councillors, health officials and members of the press, including bloggers and media activists who were the first to expose the facility’s former deplorable state.

Hunpe recalled how photos and videos of the centre’s decay went viral months ago, sparking widespread anger and embarrassment across the Badagry community. He said the administration did not ignore the outrage but embraced it as a necessary wake-up call.

According to him, “We did not run from that moment. We confronted it. We saw the outcry not as an attack but as a call to action. We accepted responsibility and moved immediately to correct the situation.”

The chairman said inviting the online activists who first raised the alarm was deliberate, describing transparency as a core value of his government. “The same people who showed the nation the problem must also show the nation the solution,” he said.

The remodeled Pota PHC now stands as a modern, clean and functional facility designed to deliver primary healthcare with dignity to mothers, children, the elderly and vulnerable residents. The centre, once written off as dilapidated and snake-infested, has transformed into one of the key highlights of Hunpe’s 100 days in office.

Hunpe urged residents to take ownership of the facility and ensure it never falls into neglect again. He emphasized that community partnership is essential for sustaining development across the local government.

Recall that Badagry Today, as part of its community health advocacy and its clamour for good governance, unearthed the devastating condition of the health facility. The report immediately drew the attention of both the local government and the Lagos State Government.

While calling for prompt payment of taxes and levies to boost the council’s capacity for infrastructure and social services, he also cautioned against vandalism and theft of public utilities. “Public facilities are not government property; they are community property. When you vandalize or destroy them, you harm the entire community,” he said.

The chairman expressed gratitude to contractors, health workers, community leaders and residents of Ward I for their patience and cooperation throughout the remodelling process.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering good governance, adding that the new Pota PHC represents the kind of visible, people-focused development Badagry will continue to witness.

The ceremony wrapped up with Hunpe declaring blessings upon Badagry, Lagos State and Nigeria.
