The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to giving children a real voice in governance, ensuring they actively contribute to decisions affecting their lives.
Speaking at the Valedictory Session of the 6th Assembly and the Inauguration of the 7th Assembly of the Lagos State Children’s Parliament, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, said children must be part of conversations that shape policies around their welfare.
He noted that the Children’s Parliament remains one of the state’s most powerful platforms for nurturing future leaders, adding that the administration is dedicated to promoting inclusion, participation and empowerment among young people. According to him, the parliament enables children to engage in democratic processes, defend their rights and make impact in nation building.
Ogunlende applauded the outgoing 6th Assembly for their contributions to child welfare and urged the new 7th Assembly to build on their legacy.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Pharm Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, echoed these sentiments. She said the parliament has helped children develop leadership skills, express their views freely and engage meaningfully on issues shaping their world. She highlighted the achievements of the 6th Assembly, including charity outreach to government homes, advocacy as Water Ambassadors for responsible water usage, and active participation in major child-focused events such as Children’s Day and the Day of the African Child.
She assured that the ministry will continue to strengthen the Children’s Parliament, uphold children’s rights and support their holistic development under the Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State.
At the ceremony, Abdulsalam Anjolaoluwa was sworn in as Speaker of the 7th Assembly, and laptops were presented to all 42 members of the outgoing 6th Assembly in recognition of their service.
