Revealed: Detained Air Force Officer Assigned to Kill Ribadu in Failed Coup to Oust President Tinubu

Fresh details have emerged about an alleged plot to kill National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as part of a failed coup plan to remove President Bola Tinubu.

According to sources who spoke with TheCable, a Nigerian Air Force officer, Squadron Leader SB Adamu, was secretly assigned to carry out the assassination. Adamu, with service number NAF/3481, hails from Jigawa State and was posted to the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), a department under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), just four weeks before the alleged coup attempt collapsed.

Contrary to reports that several officers involved in the plot were working under ONSA, Adamu was the only one directly linked to the office through the NCTC.

Military insiders revealed that when the National Coordinator of the NCTC, Major General Adamu Garba Laka, requested for a specific officer to be posted to the centre in August 2025, his request was turned down. Instead, Squadron Leader Adamu was assigned to the post, a move that has now raised suspicion that the coup plotters may have already infiltrated high levels of the military.

Adamu is a member of Course 59 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

The sources also alleged that the officer was detailed to “take out” Ribadu, while other officers were given similar deadly assignments targeting top government officials. Adamu is said to be cooperating with investigators since his arrest.

President Tinubu recently made sweeping changes in the military, including the removal of two service chiefs — among them, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.

Although the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has not officially confirmed the alleged coup plot, it admitted in a statement that 16 officers are currently being investigated.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, described the investigation as a “routine internal process” to maintain discipline and professionalism within the Armed Forces.

He assured that the findings will be made public once the probe is concluded.

Meanwhile, the identities of the detained officers have continued to surface in the media as the story unfolds.
