The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has kicked off a week-long water safety and swimming training program for school children in Badagry Local Government Area, aimed at promoting water safety and helping young Lagosians overcome their fear of water.
Now in its fifth year, the initiative is part of LASWA’s ongoing advocacy campaign tagged the “Lagos Water Savvy Kids Program.” The program is being carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Dolphin Swim School (DSS), a leading swimming academy dedicated to equipping women and children with essential aquatic skills.
The training offers participating pupils both classroom lessons and hands-on practice in swimming techniques, water safety, and basic emergency survival skills.
According to LASWA, the goal is to build confidence in children who frequently travel by boat across Lagos’ inland waterways, ensuring they understand how to stay safe in and around water.
This year, 50 pupils from five public schools in Badagry were selected to take part in the program. The schools were carefully chosen from communities where waterway transport is a major part of daily life.
“As Lagos continues to expand its water transport system, it’s important that our young commuters understand their environment and know how to respond in emergencies,” LASWA said in a statement. “Through this initiative, we’re nurturing a generation of confident, safety-conscious, and self-reliant waterway users who can handle challenges on the water.”
The training began on Monday, October 20, 2025, and will run through Friday, October 24, 2025.
