Tinubu Lifts Emergency Rule in Rivers State

President Bola Tinubu has officially ended the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, paving the way for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly to return to office starting Thursday, September 18, 2025.

In a statement released by the Presidency on Wednesday, Tinubu explained that the emergency, first declared on March 18, 2025, was necessary to halt the “total paralysis of governance” that had crippled the state.

He recalled how a fierce standoff between Governor Fubara and 27 lawmakers loyal to the Speaker had plunged Rivers into political chaos, with the Supreme Court at one point declaring that the state effectively had “no government.”

“It therefore gives me great pleasure to announce that the emergency in Rivers State shall end at midnight today. The Governor, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Ngozi Nma Odu, as well as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, will resume duties in their offices from September 18, 2025,” Tinubu said.
