In a bold step to strengthen education and ease the financial burden on parents, the Executive Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren (popularly known as RIKAY), has distributed 250 free General Certificate Examination (GCE) forms to students across the council.
The event, which took place at the Council Secretariat, also featured the official inauguration of a special tutorial committee that will oversee free lessons for the beneficiaries. The committee, chaired by veteran career teacher, Mr. Whenu Segun, includes representatives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), National Association of Badagry West Students (NABWES), Badagry Central Youth Association (BCYA), teachers, and education experts. Lessons will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Primary School, Ganyingbo, which has been designated as the official tutorial centre.
As part of preparations, Hon. RIKAY announced that the council will also provide a three-day intensive Computer-Based Test (CBT) training for students, aimed at familiarizing them with the digital examination format.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the Chairman urged them to take the opportunity seriously and strive for excellence. He charged them to aim for at least a 70 percent success rate, quoting Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka: “If you say education is costly, try ignorance.”
“You have a very bright future, and education will make you great,” Hon. RIKAY assured. “In all, however, the place of God cannot be underestimated.”
A representative of the Education Consultant present at the event also took time to educate the students on the basic do’s and don’ts of the examination, stressing the importance of discipline, focus, and adherence to rules.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Pedetin Ogooluwa Mauwubayi expressed gratitude to the Chairman, describing the initiative as a “life-changing gesture” that will not only relieve parents but also inspire students to work harder.
Hon. RIKAY concluded by pledging that this intervention marks the beginning of a larger plan to transform the educational sector in Badagry West LCDA, promising sustained support for schools and students in the area.
