Tanker Drivers Plan Nationwide Strike Amid CNG Trucks Controversy

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has announced that its Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch will begin an indefinite strike from Monday, September 8, 2025.

The union said the action follows unresolved disagreements over the planned rollout of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for fuel distribution across the country. According to NUPENG, the new system could put thousands of its members out of work in the oil and gas transport sector.

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, the union explained that several meetings with stakeholders failed to produce a solution. It also raised concerns that new drivers being recruited for the CNG trucks are being engaged under terms that may prevent them from joining existing oil and gas unions—something NUPENG says violates labour rights.

The union called on the Federal Government and regulatory agencies to urgently step in, warning that failure to resolve the issue could disrupt the supply and distribution of petroleum products nationwide.

NUPENG also appealed to Nigerians to remain patient during the industrial action, stressing that the strike is meant to safeguard the welfare and rights of its members.
