The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of seven suspects linked to the killing of Abdulwahab Jafar, a 23-year-old student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL).

According to the Police, Jafar, a 200-level Chemistry/Education student, was attacked on June 23. Nineteen suspects were initially picked up during investigations, but the number was later narrowed down to seven.

The suspects—Idris Hamza (27), Suleiman Damilare (27), Abdulsemiu Bashir (23), Bawa Aliyu (27), Yakubu Musa (24), Samson Abbah a.k.a. Small (28), and Solomon Musa a.k.a. Cabella (28)—will face charges including criminal conspiracy, robbery, unlawful society, possession of dangerous weapons, internet fraud, and suspected culpable homicide.

Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, explained that two suspects were first arrested on June 27 in Fadikpe with cannabis, charms, and a Toyota Corolla. They reportedly confessed to belonging to the Neo Black Movement of Africa (NBM) and admitted to cult-related activities on campus, including initiation ceremonies. Their statements led to further arrests.

One of the suspects, Abdulsemiu Bashir, was found with 16 SIM cards, a POS machine, and ₦77,000 believed to be proceeds from stolen phones. Others were linked to violent attacks and robberies targeting student lodges in Lapai.

In a separate case, police also arrested four men for a robbery in Suleja on September 6. A gang of about ten stormed a residence behind a filling station, stealing seven phones, a plasma TV, solar panels, and other valuables. The victim, who sustained serious head injuries, was rushed to the hospital.

Those arrested in connection with the Suleja incident include Umar Abubakar (24), Ibrahim Lawali (18), Sirajo Musa (25), and Adamu Lawal (25). Police recovered some stolen items, while efforts are ongoing to track down other gang members still on the run.

All suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
