Lagos Backs Nigeria’s $1 Trillion Economy Vision – Sanwo-Olu

Governor, Minister, and Tech Leaders Open GITEX Expo Nigeria 2025 in Lagos.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says his administration is fully committed to driving innovation, technology, and digital solutions that will fuel sustainable growth, inclusivity, and prosperity for Nigeria.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of GITEX Nigeria Tech Expo and Future Economy Conference 2025 on Wednesday at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, the governor said Lagos – Nigeria’s economic hub and a leading light in Africa – is determined to help the country achieve its ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

“We’re not just showcasing technology here today; we’re building partnerships, sparking innovation, and laying the foundation for a trillion-dollar economy,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The event, organized by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with KAOUN International, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and NITDA, brought together global tech giants like IBM, Meta, MTN, AWS, and Cisco, alongside vibrant local startups.

Sanwo-Olu described Lagos as a movement, not just a city, noting that it is home to 23 of Nigeria’s fastest-growing companies, as reported by the Financial Times. He said this growth is powered by supportive policies, dynamic private enterprises, and a thriving startup culture.

“Events like GITEX amplify our collective efforts,” he said. “They open doors for talent development, expand digital infrastructure, and build strategic partnerships that will shape our economic future. We’re not just creating a digital Nigeria; we’re building a digital Africa that inspires the world.”

The governor also praised Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, for championing initiatives in AI infrastructure and inclusive digital solutions that are putting Nigeria on the global tech map.

In his remarks, Tijani highlighted the rapid urbanization of Lagos, noting that about 2,000 new residents move into the city daily, which makes strong digital infrastructure even more critical. He announced a new government-backed programme starting October 1 to support 75 additional research projects in the digital sector, aimed at boosting innovation and attracting contributions from researchers, entrepreneurs, and Nigerians in the diaspora.

The minister stressed the need for deep collaboration among startups, corporates, and government to scale innovation and build a resilient digital ecosystem that keeps Nigeria competitive globally.
