Tragedy struck Makurdi on Tuesday morning when a suspected motorcycle thief, reportedly an ex-convict, was killed and set on fire by an angry mob on Kashim Ibrahim Way.
An eyewitness said the suspect reportedly attacked a rider around 8 a.m., stabbing him multiple times from behind before snatching his motorbike. Locals who witnessed the incident raised the alarm, and a group of youths chased and caught the suspect.
“They recovered the motorbike, beat him to death, and then set his body on fire,” the witness said. Sadly, the motorbike rider later died on the way to the hospital.
“It’s heartbreaking that the young man went out to earn his daily bread and lost his life in such a cruel way,” the witness added.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Udeme Edet confirmed the suspect had recently been released from prison but condemned the mob action. “The Commissioner of Police has warned against such acts. Investigations are ongoing,” he said.
