Centre Names Dr. Sewhude Akande as DG of Badagry Tourism Development Centre

The Badagry Tourism Development Centre (BTDC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Abolaji Sewhude Akande as its first Director General, marking a new phase in the structured promotion and preservation of Badagry’s rich tourism and cultural heritage. His three-year tenure officially commenced on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Dr. Akande, who holds an Honorary Doctorate in Arts and Culture alongside a Computer Science degree from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, is widely known for his versatility across media, tourism, and community development. He previously served with distinction at the Ebonyi State Ministry of Tourism, where his innovative contributions earned him commendations.

Beyond public service, he is the Publisher of CityMood Magazine and a former Director of Communications at the Badagry Chamber of Commerce. A Federal Government grant recipient, Dr. Akande is also the promoter of the ACM Project, an initiative dedicated to preserving African children’s cultural heritage with support from the Central Bank of Nigeria, NYSC, and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). His volunteer efforts with Lagos Beach Cleaners further highlight his passion for environmental protection.

Dr. Akande is also the author of an upcoming book titled Badagry – A Port of History, which is expected to add to the intellectual and cultural documentation of the ancient town.

Speaking shortly after his appointment, Dr. Akande pledged to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to position Badagry as a global tourism and heritage hub while ensuring that local communities reap the benefits of the sector’s growth.

The BTDC, set up to champion research, advocacy, heritage site sustainability, and innovative tourism product development, is expected to serve as a driving force for the town’s tourism revival. The Centre also places strong emphasis on environmental protection and forging strategic partnerships that will attract both local and international attention to Badagry.

Already, stakeholders are optimistic. Many believe Dr. Akande’s blend of media expertise, cultural advocacy, and grassroots engagement will open a refreshing chapter for Badagry’s tourism sector, placing the ancient town firmly on the global tourism map.
