Badagry Has an Array of Capable People to Become Lagos Governor, Says LASU Don, BLGA Convener; Urges Fairness and Equity”

A former Head of the Department of Political Science at Lagos State University (LASU) and Convener of the 2027 Badagry for Lagos State Governor Agenda, Prof. Paul-Sewa Thovoethin, has called for fairness and equity in the state’s political arrangement, stressing that the Badagry Division is long overdue to produce a governor.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ThisDay Newspaper, Prof. Thovoethin noted that despite decades of loyalty and contributions to the development of Lagos, Badagry remains the only division yet to have a representative as governor since the creation of the state.

“It is on record that Lagos State has produced nine indigenous governors, both civilian and military, without a single Badagrian among them. This calls for serious concern. Badagry has highly qualified and capable individuals who can lead Lagos successfully,” he said.

The LASU don, who also doubles as the Chairman/ Convener wof Badagry for Lagos State Governor Agenda, (BLGA) commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for notable achievements in infrastructure, particularly the completion of the Blue Line Rail project, as well as improvements in education and the empowerment of Badagry indigenes through political appointments. He however stressed that much more still needs to be done, especially in the areas of tourism development, economic empowerment, and critical manpower training.

Prof. Thovoethin, who recently led courtesy visits to local government chairmen in Badagry, explained that the move was to galvanize support and align all stakeholders with the 2027 agenda. He revealed that the next round of consultations will target traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and market associations to build a united grassroots movement.

Calling for solidarity from other divisions in Lagos, he emphasized that supporting Badagry’s governorship bid would strengthen the principles of justice, equity, and inclusion.

“Other divisions should support this cause because it completes the cycle of representation in Lagos. It will give every part of the state a sense of belonging. Our appeal is not just political but moral, rooted in fairness and the unity of Lagos State,” he added.

On whether Badagry has qualified persons for the top job, the professor was emphatic:

“Absolutely yes. Badagry is replete with accomplished professionals, entrepreneurs, seasoned politicians, and high-ranking civil servants who are more than capable of governing Lagos. The narrative that we lack qualified people is simply false.”

He urged Badagrians at home and in the diaspora to close ranks and rally behind the movement, describing it as a historic opportunity that must not be missed.

“This is our moment to unite as one family and push this agenda with superior strategies. To our brothers and sisters abroad, your voices, resources, and influence are invaluable. Together, we can turn the dream of a Badagry governor into reality,” Prof. Thovoethin declared.

The movement, according to him, also expects the support of President Bola Tinubu, whom he described as a champion of fairness and justice.
