LASTMA introduces drones to improve Lagos traffic management

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rolled out the use of modern Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, to boost traffic control, enhance security surveillance, and improve public safety across the state.

According to Vanguard announcing the initiative in a statement on Thursday, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the move reflects the government’s commitment to using technology and innovation to achieve safer and more efficient urban mobility.

According to him, the drones, equipped with high-definition cameras, will give LASTMA real-time aerial views of traffic situations, allowing for quicker interventions, better emergency coordination, and improved road safety. He added that this marks a major shift from the traditional reactive approach to a smarter, data-driven traffic management system.

Bakare-Oki explained that the UAVs will not only strengthen security and emergency response but also help encourage more discipline among motorists. He assured residents that their deployment would strictly follow privacy and regulatory guidelines to maintain public trust.

“This is another step forward in Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, where technology and innovation play a key role in building a safer, smarter, and more liveable Lagos,” he said.

He further noted that the drones would complement LASTMA’s existing quick-response measures for traffic accidents and emergencies, alongside its toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
