The Nigerian Army has confirmed a minor explosion followed by a fire outbreak at the Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Thursday morning, August 14, 2025.
Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed in a statement that the incident, which occurred in the early hours, was swiftly brought under control by emergency responders.
According to Anele, the localized explosion took place within a storage facility belonging to the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron, triggering a limited fire. Quick intervention by troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured the flames were contained before they could spread.
“No lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials,” she said, adding that a detailed assessment is underway to determine the extent of material loss.
The Army urged residents of Ilese and surrounding communities to remain calm and continue with their daily activities, assuring them that investigations into the cause of the explosion have commenced to forestall any recurrence.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to the safety and security of its personnel and neighbouring communities,” the statement read.
