Badagry Today can exclusively report that three immediate past council chairmen in Lagos State have come under the scrutiny of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of financial misappropriation while in office.
According to credible information obtained by this medium, the trio—comprising one immediate past chairman of a local government area and two of local council development areas (LCDAs)—were summoned to the Lagos office of the anti-graft agency on Monday, August 11, 2025, for interrogation.
A source familiar with the development, who spoke to Badagry Today on strict condition of anonymity, revealed that the three former chairmen were grilled for several hours in connection with alleged misuse of council funds during their tenure.
“They were all invited to the EFCC office. One of them was detained for up to 72 hours before securing his release after allegedly parting with a huge sum running into hundreds of millions of naira,” the source disclosed.
Investigations by Badagry Today further revealed that while two of the ex-council bosses were allegedly cleared after preliminary questioning, one was seriously indicted on allegations of financial misappropriation.
The indicted chairman, according to insider information, is now required to report periodically at the EFCC office pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
Petition Triggered EFCC’s Action
It was also gathered that the EFCC’s move followed a petition submitted by past councillors from one of the affected councils, who accused the immediate past chairman of large-scale financial irregularities.
EFCC officials are said to be examining documents relating to council allocations, project execution, and internally generated revenue during the suspect’s administration.
While the identities of the chairmen are yet to be officially confirmed, the development has already sent shockwaves across the Lagos grassroots political landscape, with stakeholders closely monitoring the outcome of the investigations.
The EFCC has not issued any official statement on the matter as of press time. However, sources within the agency hinted that more past and serving council executives may soon be invited for questioning as part of the anti-corruption body’s renewed focus on local government accountability.
Badagry Today will continue to track this unfolding story and provide exclusive updates as events develop.
