The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has debunked reports linking it to a purported distribution of 70,000 prepaid meters in Badagry, describing the claim as false and misleading.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Thursday, August 14, 2025, and signed by its management, the company disassociated itself from an online publication titled “Hunpe Receives Briefing as 70,000 Prepaid Meter Distribution Kicks Off in Badagry,” dated Monday, August 11.
According to EKEDC, the alleged initiative, said to be a partnership between the government and DamLaw Energy Concept, has no connection whatsoever with the company or its Agbara District.
“The purported promoters of the scheme, Messrs. Anthony Adekunle Ogungbemi and Engr. Daniel Adedokun, are neither staff of EKEDC, nor our contractors, nor certified Meter Asset Providers (MAPs),” the disclaimer stated.
Badagry Today had published a report on the proposed 70,000-meter distribution as obtained from an official press release by Badagry Local Government. The press release announced the receipt of a large-scale metering programme set to end the controversial era of estimated electricity billing in the area.
Hon. Hunpe, who received a detailed briefing on the initiative on Monday, disclosed that 70,000 prepaid electricity meters would be distributed across the council area under a project spearheaded by DamLaw Energy Concept.
The Project Coordinator, Mr. Anthony Adekunle Ogungbemi, and the Project Supervisor, Engr. Daniel Adedokun, led the delegation to the council secretariat to present the roll-out plan.
Describing the development as a “milestone” for Badagry, Hunpe said it would not only address the lingering grievances over arbitrary estimated bills but also stimulate socio-economic growth.
A stakeholders’ engagement is scheduled to hold today, Thursday, on how to distribute the meters.
However, in a latest development, EKEDC has disowned the massive metering in Badagry. The power firm emphasised that all legitimate meter rollout schemes are implemented in collaboration with the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders, and are always preceded by official announcements, public sensitisation, and clear guidelines for customers.
It further urged residents to beware of fraudulent metering offers and to verify the authenticity of any initiative before making payments or commitments.
“EKEDC will not be held liable for any loss arising from unauthorised metering or other electricity transactions,” the statement warned.
Customers were advised to rely solely on official communication channels — including EKEDC’s corporate website, verified social media handles, and customer care email — for updates on metering programmes.
BADAGRY LOCAL GOVERNMENT REACTS
Badagry Local Government has clarified that it never mentioned the involvement of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) in its recent press release announcing that the Executive Chairman, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, received a "briefing" on the proposed distribution of 70,000 prepaid meters across the council area.
Speaking to Badagry Today in a telephone conversation, the media aide to the Executive Chairman, Mr. Kriko Augustine, said the media had misquoted the statement, making it appear as though the council had already taken delivery of the meters.
He explained that the press release only stated that Hon. Hunpe was briefed by a private firm spearheading the distribution project, and at no time did it mention EKEDC’s involvement.
