Aregbesola Welcomes Lagos Defectors to ADC as First Lady Remi Tinubu Visits, Says APC, PDP Have Lost Focus - Photos

Former Minister of Interior and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have lost direction, insisting that the ADC is now the credible alternative to rescue Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking at an affirmation ceremony in Lagos where several top politicians defected to the ADC, Aregbesola said the party was committed to putting Nigerians at the centre of governance and giving youth and women at least 50 percent of elective and appointive positions.

The event coincided with the official visit of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Lagos, where she met with government officials, traditional rulers, and empowered 1,000 women across the state.

Delivering a speech titled “When Good People Unite, Nigerians Win”, Aregbesola described the ADC as a party built for the youth and those yearning for change. He argued that both APC and PDP had become mere political vehicles without vision, while Nigerians continue to suffer hardship under poor leadership.

“The ADC’s constitution boldly affirms the place of youth and women in leadership. This is not tokenism, but a recognition that Nigeria’s future lies in giving voice, space, and power to those long underrepresented,” Aregbesola said.

He added that the ADC was not a party owned or controlled by a single individual but a collective of patriotic citizens determined to rebuild Nigeria.

Among the defectors were prominent PDP leaders, including Abimbola Ogunkelu, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees; former Lagos PDP Chairmen, Muritala Ashorobi and Captain Tunji Shelle; Lagos Central Vice Chairman, Tai Benedict; and former Youth Leader, Niyi Adams. Some Labour Party members, led by Segun Osho, also joined the ADC, pledging their loyalty to the party.

Receiving the defectors, Lagos ADC Chairman, George Ashiru, presented the party’s flag and statement of purpose, stressing that the ADC must work like a united force to defeat the ruling parties.

Party leaders at the event, including Dimeji Fabiyi, a former PDP Presidential Campaign Council deputy director, called on the ADC to ensure the full integration of all new members while maintaining its vision of youth-driven leadership.

With heavyweights from PDP, Labour Party, and other political blocs now moving into its fold, the ADC says it is building a strong coalition that will serve as a true alternative for Nigerians tired of APC and PDP politics.
