Lagos LG Polls: Labour Party Picks Silifat Agbalaye as Badagry Chairmanship Candidate, 25 Others Across Lagos State

The Labour Party (LP), under the Julius Abure-led faction, has unveiled Silifat Agbalaye as its chairmanship candidate for Badagry Local Government in the upcoming July 12 local government elections in Lagos State. She is one of 26 candidates selected to represent the party across various Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

The announcement was made by Pastor Dayo Ekong, Chairperson of the Abure-led faction in Lagos, during a press briefing on Saturday. According to Ekong, the chairmanship candidates emerged following party primaries held in 26 locations across the state on Friday.

While Lagos has 57 LGAs and LCDAs combined, the party has opted not to field candidates in 30 councils, citing strategic considerations. Some of the areas where the Labour Party will not be presenting chairmanship candidates include Ikeja, Surulere, Agege, Igbogbo-Baiyeku, Lagos Island East and West, and Ajeromi-Ifelodun.

Ekong revealed that the primary in Oshodi/Isolo was postponed and will be rescheduled, with a total of 27 chairmanship candidates expected when the process is completed.

Among the notable candidates announced are:

  • Silifat Agbalaye (Badagry Central)

  • Seyi Ipinlaye, former Secretary to Amuwo-Odofin LGA (Amuwo-Odofin)

  • Oluwafemi Fadairo (Ojokoro LCDA)

  • Abudu Akinlola (Ojo)

  • Biola Samson (Oriade LCDA)

  • Dr. Hassan Ademola (Itire-Ikate LCDA)

  • Abiodun Adegun (Coker Aguda)

  • Abdulaziz Awesu (Ikorodu Central)

  • Adedayo Ashade (Ifako-Ijaiye)

  • Temitope Adulola (Iba)

  • Chioma Nzefili (Oto-Awori)

Other candidates include Paul Ayanlola (Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye), Kabiru Koleosho (Mushin), Rasak Salako (Isolo), Dr. Michael Olusegun (Ikoyi-Obalende), Lateef Liasu (Iru-Victoria Island), John Akano (Eti-Osa), Adewale Elegbeleye (Eti-Osa East), Anthonia Oyeneye (Kosofe), Adedotun Shoyemi (Agboyi-Ketu), Olajide Akinola (Ikorodu North), Bolanle Ajose (Ikorodu West), Adetolu Akinnubi (Ikotun-Igando), Gideon Adeniran (Alimosho), Olayemi Olajide (Ijede), and Bolaji Oluriwale (Mosan-Okunola).

Ekong expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the primaries, noting that they were largely free, fair, and transparent. She commended the role of security operatives in maintaining order, particularly in areas with minor disputes.

"It was a great day for the Labour Party in Lagos," she said, adding that the exercise reflected the party’s growing grassroots presence across the state.

NAN correspondents who monitored the primaries in Amuwo-Odofin, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ojo, and Ojokoro reported peaceful and orderly processes. In Amuwo-Odofin, Seyi Ipinlaye secured victory with 56 delegate votes out of 68 accredited delegates. His rival, Taiwo Akinseyi, garnered six votes, while one vote was declared void.

Ipinlaye, in his post-victory remarks, pledged to transform Amuwo-Odofin and ensure effective governance. “We are hitting the ground running. Our people should not be afraid—your votes will be counted and defended,” he said.

The LP chairman in Amuwo-Odofin, Mr. Obinna Emefoh, expressed optimism about the party's chances, noting its strong performance in previous elections across the area. "Amuwo-Odofin is for Labour Party. We are going to clear the votes this time again," he said.

Similarly, in Ojokoro LCDA, Oluwafemi Fadairo emerged victorious with 58 votes, defeating his opponent Dayo Popoola, who secured three. The primary was described as credible and well-coordinated by the local party electoral committee.

Labour Party had earlier conducted councillorship primaries across various wards in the state on Thursday.

As the July 12 election approaches, all eyes are now on the LP’s slate of candidates, with Silifat Agbalaye’s emergence in Badagry drawing particular attention. With growing support at the grassroots, the party hopes to make a significant impact in the forthcoming local polls.
