A tragic incident unfolded in Asa Umudim, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, in the early hours of Saturday, May 17, 2025, when a man allegedly set his house on fire over suspicions of his wife’s infidelity.
The fire claimed the life of one of the couple’s daughters, while his wife and two other children are currently battling for survival in the hospital.
According to community members, the suspect had become increasingly jealous, accusing his wife of receiving frequent calls from other men—calls he believed were from secret lovers. The tension reportedly escalated after several confrontations, culminating in the horrific act.
Eyewitnesses say the man poured a flammable liquid on his wife and children while they were indoors and set the house ablaze. The blaze quickly consumed the building, leaving the family trapped and unable to escape in time.
Local residents, shocked and outraged by the incident, attempted to take justice into their own hands, but police officers arrived just in time to rescue the suspect from an angry mob and place him under arrest.
The Abia State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest and stated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased daughter has been deposited at a nearby mortuary as the community continues to reel from the devastating loss.
