The confirmation came after a series of medical investigations conducted by the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), which had earlier visited the community to assess the situation. With test results now affirming cholera as the cause of the recent surge in gastroenteritis cases, the state has swung into action.
On Wednesday, the LSPHCB took its Cholera Awareness and Prevention Outreach to the heart of the affected area, hosting a major engagement event at the Badagry West LCDA Secretariat, Seme Oglogbo Area Office in Penegbo. The goal: to arm residents with knowledge and practical tools to prevent further spread.
Addressing participants at the event, the Permanent Secretary for Health District 5, Dr. Asiyanbi Oladapo, highlighted the seriousness of the outbreak. “This is a public health emergency that demands community-wide cooperation. Clean environments and safe hygiene practices are our strongest defenses,” he said.
The outreach featured educational sessions led by medical professionals and health workers. Dr. Ahmad, Director of Medical Services for District 5, gave a detailed presentation titled “Understanding Cholera,” breaking down how the disease spreads, its symptoms, and effective ways to prevent it.
Other speakers tackled the growing problem of misinformation, which often hampers timely and effective health responses. Mrs. Oguntona addressed the dangers of health-related "infodemics," stressing the importance of accurate, fact-based information in combating diseases.
Dr. Oladunloye Dorcas from the district’s rapid response team shared updates on ongoing interventions in the area. These include water quality checks, hygiene inspections for food vendors, and swift case referrals to medical centers.
The event wrapped up with a practical demonstration on hand hygiene, led by Sanitarian Thovoethin S., Director of Environmental Health Services. Community members were taught the proper way to wash hands — a seemingly simple step that can make a powerful difference in stopping the spread of infections.
As Lagos State intensifies its public health efforts, officials are urging residents to remain alert, maintain good hygiene, and report any suspected cases of cholera promptly. The state’s outreach continues across vulnerable communities in Badagry and beyond, with a strong message: prevention begins with awareness.
