Organised by Bond Africana in partnership with the Olatunji/Okoosi family, the celebration aims to honour Olatunji’s remarkable legacy as a pioneer of African music on the global stage. Beyond the music, the festival will shine a spotlight on Badagry’s rich cultural heritage and its place in the story of African identity.
According to Peter Olaide-Mesewaku, Chief Operating Officer of Bond Africana, the event is more than just a tribute. “This celebration is a call to action to preserve and promote Africa’s cultural giants,” he said. “It’s an invitation to artists, scholars, tourists, and lovers of African culture to engage with the powerful legacy of a man who used rhythm to connect worlds.”
Born in Ajido in 1927, Babatunde Olatunji rose to international fame in the 1950s and ‘60s with his groundbreaking album Drums of Passion, which introduced African drumming to audiences around the world. His work left an indelible mark—not only in music but also in civil rights movements and cross-cultural understanding.
The festival promises a vibrant lineup of activities, including traditional rites and prayers, captivating cultural performances, a Zangbeto masquerade exhibition, and guided tours of historical heritage sites across Badagry.
As the town gets ready to honour a legend, the Feast of a Legend is shaping up to be both a powerful homecoming and a celebration of African rhythm, pride, and legacy.
