A 41-year-old man from Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga, has been arrested after allegedly killing the mother of his two children in a brutal axe attack.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred on Monday, May 12, 2025, following a heated argument between the suspect and the 31-year-old woman. Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that the confrontation escalated, leading the man to strike the victim with an axe, fatally wounding her.
“It is alleged that the suspect attacked the victim with an axe, resulting in fatal injuries,” said Ndubane in a statement released Wednesday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and the victim were parents to two children. Shockingly, after the attack, the man allegedly left the woman's lifeless body lying in the street.
Authorities were quickly alerted, and a swift response from police and other emergency services led to the suspect's arrest shortly after the incident.
The man is expected to appear before the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court, formerly known as the Tonga Magistrate Court, where he will face a charge of murder.
Reacting to the incident, Acting Provincial Police Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, condemned the killing, describing it as an “inhumane act.”
He also used the opportunity to urge the public to seek help when dealing with domestic or relationship challenges instead of resorting to violence.
“Gender-based violence and femicide remain a serious threat to the safety and well-being of women and children in our communities,” Mkhwanazi added.
The incident has once again cast a spotlight on the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa, prompting renewed calls for stronger support systems and early intervention in abusive relationships.
