Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Olalomi Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo for assault and related offences.
Delivering judgement on Tuesday, the Chief Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State, convicted the artiste on two of the three charges brought against him—assault and conspiracy—while a third count, involving theft of musical equipment, was not upheld.
According to court documents marked MIF/192C/2023, Portable was arraigned in April 2023 following a police investigation into an incident that occurred on November 18, 2022, in Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District. He was accused of assaulting one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi and conspiring with others, still at large, to carry out the attack.
Despite being granted bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties from his immediate family, Portable had failed to appear for multiple court hearings, prompting his remand last Thursday.
Police prosecutor Inspector Olumide Awoleke told the court that the singer’s actions violated Sections 351 and 517 of the Ogun State Criminal Code Law of 2006.
In his ruling, Magistrate Ilo sentenced Portable to one month in prison or a N10,000 fine on Count 1 (conspiracy to assault), and two months or a N20,000 fine on Count 2 (unlawful assault), to run concurrently.
The singer has not publicly responded to the verdict as of press time.
