The Executive Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Hon Ajose Peter Kumayon, on Saturday embarked on an unscheduled working visit to five riverine communities, turning what began as an inspection of solar streetlight installations into a wider assessment of the communities’ pressing infrastructure needs.

Ajose and his team visited Ikotun Àṣẹ̀, Moba, Oko Ogbo, Ojogun and Dadi Louis, where he inspected the ongoing installation of solar powered streetlights being implemented under the administration’s APK Light Up Rural Area Initiative.

The project is aimed at improving visibility, security and safety in communities where access to conventional electricity remains a major challenge. The solar lights are expected to provide reliable illumination after dark and create a safer environment for residents, pedestrians, commuters and businesses.

However, during the inspection, the chairman went beyond the original purpose of the visit after community leaders and residents drew his attention to several abandoned and dilapidated public facilities.

Ajose personally inspected primary health centres, school buildings and town halls in the affected communities, with the condition of some of the facilities, particularly the PHCs in Ikotun Àṣẹ̀, Moba and Dadi Louis, attracting his immediate attention.

The chairman expressed concern over the state of the facilities and directed that their structural conditions be properly assessed to determine whether they require renovation or complete reconstruction.

The development was warmly received by residents and community leaders, who described the chairman’s visit as historic and unprecedented.

Some of the community leaders said they could not recall previous chairmen of the council personally visiting some of the riverine communities to inspect their challenges and engage directly with residents.

They commended Ajose for coming personally to see the situation on the ground rather than relying solely on reports, saying the visit demonstrated a genuine interest in the development and welfare of residents in the riverine areas.

The residents also applauded the administration for commencing the installation of solar streetlights, noting that improved lighting would enhance security and make movement safer at night.

The community leaders further commended the administration’s efforts in healthcare, education and infrastructure and pledged their support for the council’s development agenda.

Addressing the residents, Ajose assured them that his administration would continue to ensure that development reaches every part of Olorunda LCDA, regardless of the difficult terrain or location of a community.

He stressed that residents of riverine communities deserve access to basic infrastructure and public services just like residents in other parts of the council.

Ajose said the assessment of the dilapidated health centres, schools and town halls would form part of the administration’s plans to address infrastructure gaps across Olorunda LCDA.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare delivery, education, empowerment and infrastructure in line with the RESHAPE Agenda of his administration.

The chairman assured the communities that the council would pursue an equitable distribution of development projects and ensure that their needs receive appropriate attention.

He added that the solar streetlight project was only one part of the administration’s broader efforts to improve living conditions and stimulate development in rural and riverine communities.

The unscheduled visit provided residents with an opportunity to present their long standing challenges directly to the council chairman and have him see the condition of their communities firsthand.

In Ajose’s entourage were the Leader of the Legislative Arm of Olorunda LCDA and Councillor representing Ward A, Hon Dauda Aina, Chief of Staff, Hon Cornelius Akinyele, Supervisor for Health, Hon Gandonu Abodo John, among others.

For residents of Ikotun Àṣẹ̀, Moba, Oko Ogbo, Ojogun and Dadi Louis, the visit was more than an inspection of solar streetlights. It offered a rare opportunity to bring their long standing concerns directly before the council chairman and renewed their hope that the identified infrastructure challenges would receive government attention.
