Suspected kidnappers who abducted a medical doctor in Auchi, Edo State, and murdered his younger brother have been arrested in a dramatic twist after they were identified by their victim at the very hospital where he works.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended when they brought their sick children to the hospital for medical attention. While carrying out his duties, the once kidnapped doctor, Dr Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, walked into the ward and instantly recognised the men as members of the gang that abducted him weeks earlier. He quietly alerted hospital authorities, who in turn contacted security operatives, leading to the swift arrest of the suspects.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed that the command had already made an earlier arrest linked to the same kidnapping case.
She explained that the first breakthrough occurred on February 3 when operatives of the Auchi Division, during a routine bush combing operation in collaboration with local hunters and vigilante groups at Warake Forest, intercepted one Saminu Kawujie, described as male.
According to her, a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of two knives, two mobile phones, one UBA ATM card and the sum of twenty thousand two hundred and fifty naira.
ASP Ikoedem added that an identification parade was later carried out at the police station, where the suspect was positively identified by Dr Babatunde as one of those involved in his abduction.
Police authorities assured that investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the kidnapping syndicate and bring them to justice, while the arrested suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The arrest has been widely praised by residents of Auchi, who described it as a major relief and a strong warning to criminal elements operating within the area.
