Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has been plunged into deep mourning following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died in a fatal road accident in Delta State on Tuesday.
Reports by TVC News revealed that the late Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was involved in a deadly crash at Umunede. He was said to have been rushed to a hospital in Agbor for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead by doctors.
The sad news was officially confirmed by Turkish football club Beşiktaş, where Ndidi plays his club football. In a condolence message shared on X, the club expressed sympathy with the Nigerian midfielder and his family.
May Allah have mercy on the deceased. We offer our heartfelt condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and all his loved ones, the club stated.
Ndidi was recently named captain of the Super Eagles, taking over the armband from William Troost Ekong. He led Nigeria to a third place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a tournament that marked a personal milestone as he scored his first ever goal for the national team.
During the AFCON campaign, Ndidi spoke fondly of his father, recalling the role he played in shaping his discipline and career. He also referenced his admiration for former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo while explaining the inspiration behind his goal celebration against Tunisia.
Since news of his father’s passing became public, tributes and messages of condolence have continued to pour in from fans, teammates, football administrators and members of the Nigerian football community, all rallying around the Super Eagles captain in his moment of grief.
