JUST IN: Navy Officer in Clash With Wike Survives Alleged Assassination Attempt in Abuja

A fresh twist has emerged in the heated faceoff between Nigerian Navy officer Lt AM Yarima and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as the officer reportedly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday evening in Abuja, report by Vanguard says

According to Vanguard, military sources revealed that Yarima was trailed by unknown men dressed in black and moving in two unmarked Hilux vans. The suspicious vehicles allegedly followed him from the NIPCO Filling Station along the Line Expressway down to Gado Nasco Way.

Sensing danger, Yarima was said to have made a sharp strategic move that helped him shake off the suspected attackers. The incident happened around six thirty in the evening, and security agencies have now launched an investigation. Details, however, are being kept under wraps so as not to jeopardize the process.

The development comes days after the widely circulated confrontation between the officer and the FCT Minister at a disputed land in Gaduwa District. The video of the clash sparked nationwide reactions and even prompted a presidential directive suspending demolition activities at the site.

Since then, military veterans across the country have openly condemned Wike’s verbal outburst against the officer. They have also rejected calls for disciplinary measures against Yarima.

Abiodun Durowaiye Herberts, the spokesman of the Coalition of Retired Veterans, warned that former service members would occupy both the office and residence of the FCT Minister if any form of punishment was meted out to the officer. He stressed that the military swears allegiance to the nation and not to individuals, and urged Wike to apologise for his comments.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru Abubakar, has reassured the public that no military personnel acting within the law will be punished over the Gaduwa incident.

He maintained that officers on lawful duty will always be protected.

Veterans had earlier vowed to mobilise nationwide if Yarima faced any disciplinary action.
