The federal government has introduced a new foreign jobs initiative aimed at opening doors for young Nigerians to access remote employment opportunities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The programme is part of ongoing efforts to tackle unemployment by connecting Nigerian talents with diaspora owned businesses abroad.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM announced the initiative after signing a partnership agreement with InnoPower Africa in Abuja. Speaking at the event, NIDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri Erewa said the project reflects the commission’s commitment to empowering Nigerian youths through the support of citizens abroad.
She noted that Nigerians in the diaspora are already employers and mentors and can help create meaningful opportunities for young professionals back home.
Founder of InnoPower Africa Emil Ekiyor explained that the partnership will build a full talent pipeline linking Nigerian institutions and global businesses. He said the ecosystem includes ITANA and other top players who will support recruitment and deployment through a secure digital business zone.
The initiative also works with the University of Lagos’ African Research Universities Alliance Centre of Excellence for Unemployment and Skills Development, as well as the National Talent Export Programme. Together, they will offer world class training in technical skills, communication and remote work best practices.
Ekiyor said Nigerian youths have the talent and potential to excel globally, stressing that what has been lacking is access and proper preparation. He added that the collaboration with NIDCOM and other partners will help make Nigerian professionals more visible and competitive in international markets.
The programme will kick off with a paid internship at the University of Lagos where outstanding students will work with international companies and gain practical experience. According to Ekiyor, businesses registered under NIDCOM’s diaspora database will also receive a discount on their first year of service when they employ a Nigerian professional for a full year.
He said the goal is to give students a smooth transition from academic life into full time remote work while equipping them with global business skills.
At the heart of the project is Fast Track Virtual, InnoPower’s talent placement platform which conducts rigorous vetting, intensive skills training, cultural orientation and continuous quality checks for young professionals seeking international work exposure.
