Tragedy struck on Wednesday night at MTN Bus Stop, Araromi-Ale, along the Badagry Expressway, Lagos, when a popular shawarma vendor was gunned down by yet-to-be-identified assailants suspected to be cultists, multiple reports have suggested.
The victim, identified as Afeez, was reportedly attending to customers at his shop, Xelebrity Shawarma, near MTN Bus Stop, when the attackers stormed the area and shot him dead on the spot. MTN Bus Stop is located at Araromi-Ale, not Mowo, as reported by some media outlets, Badagry Today has confirmed.
According to residents, the incident caused panic in the neighborhood, forcing many to flee for safety. “He was just doing his business when they came and shot him. It all happened so fast,” a source who preferred not to be named told PUNCH Metro.
An anti-cultism advocacy group, NaijaConfra, which also reported the killing, alleged that Afeez was targeted by suspected members of the Eiye confraternity. The group, however, noted that findings from community sources did not link the deceased to any cult group.
“After speaking with sources on the ground, NaijaConfra can now report that in yesterday’s attack around MTN Bus Stop, Araromi-Ale (not Mowo), Eiye cultists killed a man named Afeez,” the page wrote.
“Neutral sources in the community said they never saw Afeez involved in cultism. Some residents alleged that an Eiye cultist accused him of having an affair with his wife, while others claimed the issue might have been business-related after Afeez recently bought a white Toyota Avalon.”
Described by locals as humble, peaceful, and hardworking, Afeez was said to be married and well-liked by customers in the area. His death has sparked outrage and renewed fears over the rising wave of cult-related killings in parts of Lagos.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, noting that an investigation had begun.
“According to reports reaching us, the victim was struck on the back of the head by an unidentified assailant. At this time, we cannot link the incident to any particular individual or group,” Adebisi said in a telephone interview.
She added that detectives from the command’s homicide unit have commenced investigations to uncover the motive behind the killing and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Cult-related violence has continued to plague several communities across Lagos, with residents in Badagry calling on security agencies to intensify patrols and protect innocent citizens from further attacks.
