The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, to step up efforts in promoting Lagos’ rich cultural heritage and unlocking its vast tourism potential.
Leading the charge during plenary on Tuesday, Hon. Bonu Solomon, member representing Badagry Constituency 1 and Chairman of the Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture, stressed that the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day, “Our Country, Our Heritage,” is a timely reminder for Lagos to fully harness its untapped tourist attractions.
He urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to mandate the ministry to actively showcase the state’s cultural values, noting that such initiatives would not only preserve tradition but also provide a major boost to the economy.
Other lawmakers lent their voices in support. Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu proposed creating an annual tourism calendar to help visitors better plan their trips, while Hon. Omolara Olumegbon cited the success of “Detty December,” which attracted more than 500,000 visitors to Lagos last year.
Hon. Oladipo Ajomale went further, suggesting the construction of an iconic landmark to rival Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. He recommended a monumental edifice—such as a giant Eyo statue—integrated with restaurants, shopping malls, and entertainment hubs to cement Lagos’ reputation as a global tourism powerhouse.
