BLG Chairman, Hunpe Recalls 146 Sacked Workers First Reported by Badagry Today

The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, has approved the reinstatement of 146 non-pensionable staff who were earlier disengaged from the council’s workforce. The move marks a significant phase in his administration’s ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and service delivery across all sectors, statement from the council says

The re-engagement was announced through an official statement released on the council’s verified Facebook page titled “Hunpe Re-engages 146 Casual Staff.” According to the statement, the decision aligns with the chairman’s performance-driven reform policy designed to reposition the local government workforce for better productivity and impact.

The Council’s statement revealed that about 90 percent of the re-engaged employees are essential workers who will be redeployed to critical areas such as primary healthcare, environmental sanitation, and security services. These sectors, the statement noted, are key to sustaining effective grassroots governance and addressing manpower shortages.

Hon. Hunpe reaffirmed his commitment to building a motivated and disciplined workforce capable of delivering quality services to the people of Badagry. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone in the system earns their place and contributes meaningfully to community development,” he stated.

This development follows Badagry Today’s earlier exclusive report on the mass disengagement of the non-pensionable staff and the popurted move to hire a fresh workers, which had generated mixed reactions among residents. While some hailed the move as a bold attempt to cleanse the system, others criticized it as harsh and untimely.

Badagry Today had earlier reported that the chairman had sacked non-pensionable employees hired by his predecessor, Hon. Onilude Segun Adeniran, and was already shortlisting their replacements. The council authorities later described the report as inaccurate, though it was not completely debunked.

Days later, Hon. Hunpe defended the decision, citing rampant absenteeism, ghost workers, and poor performance among several staff members. He recalled that during routine inspections, he discovered alarming cases, including one where a security guard left his young son to man the gate in his absence.

“Badagry has 15 primary health centres, yet only three operate around the clock,” he lamented. “It was unsustainable and unfair for the council to keep paying salaries that did not translate into real work.”

However, the chairman clarified that the earlier disengagement was never intended as a permanent dismissal but rather as part of a broader reform process to identify and retain only competent and diligent workers.

With the recall of 146 staff members, the council appears to be striking a balance between accountability and compassion—rewarding dedication while maintaining high standards of service delivery.

Observers say the latest move reflects Hunpe’s pragmatic leadership style, which combines firmness with fairness, as he continues to steer Badagry Local Government toward greater efficiency and responsiveness to the needs of its people.
