Pay-TV giant, StarTimes, has appointed versatile marketing communications professional and Brandcom Awards’ “Top 35 Under 35” honoree, Oke Umurhohwo, as its new Marketing Director.
Oke, widely admired for his remarkable career journey, brings over a decade of experience spanning technology, consumer electronics, and fintech.
He began his career with mobile phone brand itel, where he rose through the ranks and helped transform the once little-known brand into a household name across Africa. His innovative strategies, including the “Love Always On” CSR initiative, campus activations, and celebrity partnerships, played a crucial role in driving massive growth in itel’s market share, digital footprint, and consumer engagement.
From itel, Oke transitioned to fintech as Global Marketing Manager at Zap Africa, where he successfully spearheaded the company’s rebrand, introducing a fresh identity, improved user experience, and bold engagement strategies that bolstered Zap’s position in Africa’s competitive crypto market.
Now at StarTimes, he faces the challenge of leading the company’s marketing transformation at a time of intense competition in the pay-TV industry. His mission includes refreshing brand perception, modernizing digital engagement, delivering sharper campaigns, and ultimately driving subscriber growth.
Speaking on his appointment, Oke said:
“StarTimes has an incredible story, but I see even greater opportunities ahead. From refreshing our digital touchpoints to improving how we connect with customers across channels, my focus will be on repositioning StarTimes as a modern, engaging, and customer-first brand. Together with the team, we will raise the bar and ensure our marketing efforts directly contribute to growth.”
With his proven track record in brand building and digital-first strategies, Oke’s arrival marks a new era for StarTimes as it seeks to deepen its footprint and sharpen its competitive edge.
