The Lagos State Police Command says it has restored calm to Tejuosho Market Phase II, Surulere, after a violent clash sparked by hoodlums posing as protesters over a power outage.
According to the police, the group went on a rampage, vandalising parts of a commercial bank in the market and even attacking officers stationed there. However, Mobile Police operatives on duty quickly repelled the attack, preventing the thugs from gaining access to both the bank and the police post within the market.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babasuyi B. Oluseyi, who signed a statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, said 18 suspects were arrested during the unrest.
The statement explained that the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on September 18, when miscreants began attacking people and destroying goods. Reinforcements were immediately deployed, including regular officers and tactical squads, to restore peace.
Oluseyi confirmed that trading activities have since resumed and assured that investigations are ongoing to track down others involved.
He quoted the police commissioner as warning that attacks on security personnel and destruction of property will not be tolerated. “The suspects are in custody and will be prosecuted once investigations are completed,” the statement said.
The Command urged traders and residents to remain calm and go about their normal businesses, while encouraging the public to report complaints to the nearest station or through its emergency hotlines.
