Fresh cracks may be emerging between the Lagos State House of Assembly and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration as lawmakers have ordered the state’s Accountant General to halt the payment of salaries and allowances to appointees yet to be screened and confirmed by the Assembly.
The House also directed the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, to appear before the Committee on Legislative Compliance to explain why some political appointees had assumed office without statutory approval.
Raising the alarm during plenary, Hon. Lukman Olumoh, representing Ajeromi-Ifelodun I, lamented that several agencies whose heads were not confirmed often resisted oversight, claiming they were not under the Assembly’s supervision. He described such practices as illegal and undermining the authority of the legislature.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa expressed displeasure over the recurring situation, stressing that it was unacceptable for the executive to sideline the Assembly’s constitutional role in confirming appointments. He urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to immediately direct the withdrawal of appointment letters issued to agency heads yet to be confirmed by lawmakers.
The development underscores growing tension between the executive and legislative arms in Lagos, raising questions about the balance of power and respect for due process in the state.
