LAGOS — There was panic on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Monday after fire broke out at Afriland Tower, a six-storey commercial building, sending workers and passers-by running for safety.
According to Vanguard News the quick response of firefighters helped prevent what could have turned into a major disaster.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was reported at about 1:38 p.m., and fire crews from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations were swiftly deployed.
Deputy Controller General of the agency, Ogabi Olajide, explained that the fire started from the inverter room in the building’s basement before smoke spread to other floors, engulfing the structure.
“Occupants were evacuated, and the fire has since been put out, calming the initial panic before our arrival,” Olajide confirmed.
Eyewitnesses said workers and visitors fled the building as thick smoke rose into the sky, disrupting activities along the busy commercial district.
As of press time, no casualties had been recorded. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and the level of damage.
